Transfer files from phone to laptop: step-by-step
Move photos, PDFs, and videos between a phone and laptop with MallowShare. Learn QR joining, local network tips, browser compatibility, and safe downloads.
What you need before starting
Use a laptop with an up-to-date browser and a phone connected to the internet. To share within one local network, both devices should be able to reach the MallowShare web server. For a public hosted version, open the same HTTPS site on both devices. A public URL does not automatically guarantee that WebRTC can connect directly: restricted networks may require a relay.
1. Create a temporary sharing room
On your laptop, open the official MallowShare website and select Quick Share or Create Room. A room is a short-lived sharing workspace: you can add multiple files, see participants, and manage who may download. Choose a room lifetime that allows recipients enough time to begin their transfers. If you are sharing a large video, the transfer may continue after the room entry window closes, subject to the application’s timeout and connection.
2. Join from your phone without typing a password
Open the room invite or scan its QR code using your normal phone camera. A valid room QR contains an access token, so a guest can join without typing the room password. Treat the QR as a private key: anyone who has a usable invite can join until it expires or the host rotates it. Manual room-code joining still requires authentication.
3. Add photos, PDFs, videos or other files
On either device, choose the files you want to share. MallowShare keeps an individual file list instead of forcing everything into a combined ZIP. Uploading a file into the sharing wall announces it to other participants; the actual file transfer normally happens directly between compatible browsers when both people are online.
4. Receive just the files you need
Tap or click the file you want to download. For large files, keep the sender’s browser open and choose a supported disk-streaming download method if available. Some browsers require a download confirmation or may limit background activity. When receiving several files, use selection or Pocket Picks to avoid unwanted downloads. The app may offer a ZIP download, but ZIP is not mandatory.
Why is a 2 GB movie slower than messaging apps?
A direct transfer is limited by the sender’s available upload bandwidth, receiver bandwidth, device memory, Wi-Fi conditions and whether the connection can be established without TURN relay. The 10-minute room lifetime is not a 10-minute guarantee for the whole movie. Test your measured MB/s in the transfer panel. For unreliable connections, the app should report the failure clearly rather than suggesting an unlimited transfer speed.
Troubleshooting phone-to-laptop sharing
If a QR contains your development address, it points to the phone itself and cannot open the laptop’s local server. Use the laptop’s reachable LAN IP or a public HTTPS URL. In-app camera scanning on phones normally requires HTTPS; scanning through the phone’s normal camera can still open an ordinary supported link. If the devices cannot connect, first try a different network or a supported relay. Never disable firewall protection indiscriminately.
Is MallowShare private?
Rooms use access controls and short-lived invites. Some connections transfer files through WebRTC encrypted channels. Not all chat features are end-to-end encrypted against the server, and anyone who downloads a file keeps a copy after the room expires. Use trusted recipients and avoid assuming automatic expiry erases downloaded content.
